Rhymes of History

Dr. Thornburg explains how innovation can rekindle interactions and activities from the past (2009). One example would be the whiteboard. The interactive whiteboard in the classroom is just an improvement of the chalkboard from the past. The SmartBoard allows teachers and students to write information on the board to be displayed. The Smart Board allows teachers to connect their computers to display information, which makes this an improvement from the technology in the past.

  1. Alicia, does your school system currently utilize Interactive or SMART boards? My school system utilizes Interactive Boards, and we love them. The only issue our teachers have with them, is that they take up a lot of their white board space, which we as teachers still utilize even with the wonderful technology of the Interactive Whiteboard. I cannot wait to see the next big thing in white board technology.

  2. I just bought a SMART board for the classroom where I work. The trainers are having issues with it because it doesn't really "feel" like a whiteboard, and switching between modes feels clumsy. Have you had similar experiences?

  3. Indeed, history does repeat itself. I have watched educators reinvent the wheel several times in my 17 years of teaching, each time giving the technology a new face. The interactive whiteboard is a product of past tools; however, it is interesting to see how the other forces such as science fiction, and evolution played a role the emergence of the SMART board.
